Customers Information


Laptops may be used in the Campus Libraries. To gain access to the internet an AIX-account is required. Further information can received at the RHRK (Bldg. 34, Room 209).

Library Account

Your library account offers you access to your personal data, that is, to your present and previous loans, reserves, and library fees and provides you with an overview of your interlibrary loans and loan requests. It enables you to renew and reserve library materials. To access your library account, login with your "Chipkarte" or "CampusCard" number. Enquire about your personal password at the Circulation Desk of any of the Campus Libraries or via zbausleihe[at]ub.uni-kl.de.

Library Card

A library card is required to borrow materials from the University Campus Libraries. Students, staff and faculty members of the Technical University must present a valid “Chipkarte”, students and faculty members of the University of Applied Sciences a valid “CampusCard” to register. Visitors to the University Library must provide a valid identification card or passport to obtain a "Chipkarte". The "Chipkarte" as well as the CampusCard may be used in all University Campus Libraries.

Library Card Replacement

Lost or stolen library cards can be replaced for a fee of €5.00 (paper version), €8.00 (guest "Chipkarte") or €25 (student, staff and faculty member" Chipkarte"). To avoid card misuse, please report loss of your library card to any TU-Campus Library as soon as possible.

Library Fees and Fines

Use of the library is in general free of charge. Special library services such as the Interlibrary Loan Service and Document Delivery involve a fee. Library fines are charged to users who fail to return library materials on time. Detailed information can be found on our Table of Fines.

Library Orientation

Introductory classes on the use of the library and its resources are offered upon request.  Contact the Central Information (Tel. 0631/205-3856) or a Department Library of your choice for an appointment.

Library Instruction

The University Library offers students, faculty members and other interested individuals instructional sessions on the use of the library. The sessions take place in the Central Library at designated hours listed in “Fit for Study” or by appointment. Upon request the library staff will tailor the presentation to meet your specific needs. Contact the Central Information (Bldg. 32) to arrange a session or to register.

Library Regulations

Patrons who wish to utilize the library must agree to conform to the regulations of the University Library. A pamphlet entitled “Library Regulations” is available in print form at all Campus Libraries and can also be found online. Patrons applying for a library card agree to comply with these policies when signing the registration form.

Literature Search

The University Library offers a wide range of data search facilities such as fact and full text databases through external hosts. Instructional courses on the use of these databases take place in the Central Library. Contact a subject librarian or the Central Information for further information.


The Virtual Library of Rhineland-Palatinate, Saar and the German-speaking Community of Belgium provides a delivery service for its users called LITexpress. Books, audiovisual and digital items can be ordered online from the Virtual Library through LITexpress. Delivery is made to the participating libraries in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Saar and the German-speaking Communities of Belgium, where users can collect and return their ordered items. Fee: € 2.50

Loan Periods

Information concerning loan periods can be found under the link Loan Period Overview. In general book renewal is possible.
Special service: Library users are reminded by e-mail to return or renew their loaned library materials prior to due date.


Borrowing privileges vary for different patron groups and for different materials. All registered library users with a valid "Chipkarte" may borrow materials from the library. Library materials on loan may not be passed on to a third party. The user is responsible for any damage or loss of library materials.
Added service: Library users with a valid e-mail address are reminded by e-mail to return or renew their borrowed library materials four days prior to due date.

Loss of Borrowed Items

By loss or damage of library materials a replacement or replacement equivalent must be made to the library (see Library Regulations §25(2)).
