Textbook Collection

The University’s Textbook Collection offers multiple copies of basic textbooks and course literature as well as frequently requested book titles. The materials are available for loan.


The Textbook Collection, located in Bldg. 32 (s. map), is freely accessible.

Textbooks pertaining to the following subject areas are available for loan:

The items in the Textbook Collection are listed in the online catalog (OPAC). Choose "Textbook Collection" or "Entire Library Collection" for your search.


Library  registration is required prior to lending materials from the Textbook Collection. University faculty, students and staff members must present a valid University "Chipkarte" and be registered as a library user to borrow and renew library materials. To avoid misuse of your "Chipkarte" please report loss or theft as soon as possible. Your account will be blocked immediately. The University "Chipkarte" can be replaced for a fee of € 25. Replacement of a conventional (paper) library card costs € 10,00. For non-university staff is a one-time charge of € 10,00 to be paid.

Report changes of address promptly!


Library users must present a valid University "Chipkarte" or library card when borrowing library materials. Items are to be checked out at the Circulation Desk, where they will be booked to your account.

Loan Period

The loan period for items in the Textbook Collection is 31 days.


Materials from the Textbook Collection may be renewed at any time provided they have not been placed on reserve by another user. Renewals must be made prior to due date, i.e. every four weeks. The maximum extended loan period is 52 weeks and begins with the first day of loan. Renewals can be made online or at the Circulation Desk of any Campus Library. Please present a valid "Chipkarte" or library card when renewing your borrowed items at the desk. Books may not be renewed by telephone.

Renewal requests may be sent by e-mail to: zbausleihe[at]ub.uni-kl.de, by fax: 0631/205-409 or made online.
Please include your address and "Chipkarte" or library card number with your online renewal request.

Reserving Library Materials

All circulating books may be reserved by another patron. To reserve and item currently checked out to another library user, use the catalog's "Reserve" (Vormerk) button or ask the library staff at the Circulation Desk to reserve the item for you. As soon as the item is returned and available you will be notified by e-mail. It will be held for you up at the respective Circulation Desk for pick-up.
You cannot reserve any items you personally have on loan.

Overdue charges and fees

The University Library is required by the State Bar to charge an overdue fee of €1.00 per item and overdue week for borrowed materials not returned by due date.
Library materials may not be checked out nor renewed before the fees are paid.

Purchase Recommendation

If you have a book or other item you would like to recommend for purchase by the University Library for the Textbook Collection, use the online Purchase Recommendation Form or inform the library staff of your suggestion. The University Library is dedicated to supporting the educational needs of students. Suggestions will be forwarded to the appropriate subject specialist for consideration, are however subject to library selection policies.
